What is a good  low buck combo for M8 ? Still retains gas mileage and rrelatively inexpensive?

Hit up Durwood (member here) .480 CR cam, most any 2 into 1 pipe, ditch the plastic manifold, PV tune, 45+ mpg,    2020, 114", FXLRS, CR480, S&S 2-1 (harleytechtalk.com)

That's pretty much it, these motors really respond to a cam change, good exhaust, air cleaner, and as important as the parts, a good tune.
Peruse the Dyno section, and especially the cam comparison tests in the M8 section by Fuel Moto and Durwood.
If the government gives you everything you want,
it can take everything you have.
