I was trying to start the bike today and the starter turned the motor over a few revolutions. The starter disengaged and there was whirring sound coming from the starter. I could not shut it off with the ignition. I had to disconnect the neg battery cable to get it to stop. It ran for a couple minutes as I took seat off and got a wrench. The bike has the start button on the handlebars and one behind the oil tank. When I bought it the guy said he installed because he didn't trust the wiring in the handle bar controls. There is a delay on the right side that is mounted to the fender by the swing arm. I'll replace that tomorrow and see if that solves. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this?

Was it working fine until now? Or did you or someone "work" on it? It is imperative that the heavy cables on the solenoid under the battery tray, and the one on the primary, have the cables on the correct terminal posts. Else they will self-energize.

Nothing was touched. It was working fine before this happened

Kd posted a link to a thread that is most likely your problem.

it can take everything you have.

This one doesn't appear to be serviceable. The cover will not come off due to two wires that run up through the top and are soldered to the posts.  It does appear to be trash.
Any recommendations for replacement?

It happens usually when not enough cold crank amps are presented to the solenoid for some reason.

The battery tested 12.8 volts and 377 cca. Relay tested out ok. The solenoid was replaced. It was in bad shape. The solenoid I got required some modification to get the solenoid in straight. It turned out to be the auxiliary starter button that was added by previous owner. I removed the wire from the button from the solenoid. Solenoid works as it should now.

Pull the disc out and clean it up with some sand paper or a small file. The upper stud will come out after you remove the nut and then turn it 180*and clean it up. Same with the lower stud. You can flip the disc 180* if you remove the small clip behind the spring. Or, you can just buy a new one.

This one has its share of dodgy add ons.
