Hot wire to starter

So this 82' Flh fired up ran for few minutes on several different tries. Now attempting to get it to fire has the hot wire from starter to battery getting smoking hot but yet bike not firing? Is this a sign for an issue?
Any help be appreciated...thanx in advance
