Hi all
I'm setting up to replace compensator, primary bearings and main shaft seals etc in the not so near future.
I'd like to make a seal protector for the transmission shaft... so when I slide the seal on, I don't screw it up on the bare shaft. Thought I'd make it from aluminum. Does anyone have the required dimensions? I guess the outer diameter is pretty clear - ie the inner diameter of the seal... what about the inner diameter and length?
I should add it's an 07 Softail.

Thanks
Pauly

May I suggest to use some electrical tape with a light coat of grease. That's if I understnad the process you describe correctly.
Just Ride..........

Thanks for that TN,
If I have to, that's exactly what I'll do, but I'm happy to make the tool if I can get the dimensions.
Thanks
Pauly

Pauly,.... probably not what you want to hear but since you're getting (good) practical alternate suggestions instead of a direct response, I'll suggest Georges' Garage Specialty Tools. They sell what you want for $60.
And for those hard-earned crispy bills you get the Mainshaft "cover" to protect the seal from the shaft as well as the Main Drive Gear Seal Installer itself in anodized aluminum, excellent customer service and a lifetime guarantee.
But tape n'lube works too!
We're all A-holes. It's to what degree that makes us different.

pauly

Thanks tacocaster but you're exactly right (about me not wanting to hear that) :-)
As I'm in Australia, it'll probably cost $50 to get it here, and with the exchange rate now, it'll probably be $150 Aussie dollars! The option is pay 20 for some 50mm aluminum bar and spin one up.

Thanks
Pauly

The seal protector that I made is:

I.D. 0.945"
O.D. 1.250"
Length 1.760"

I filed a radius on the nose.

Thanks Speedy!

This is for a 6 speed twinky?

I do think the 07-up 6-speed mainshaft use a bigger seal than the earlier 5 and 6- speeds.
My seal protector tool from George's Garage measures 0.976" ID, 0.996" OD, 2.086" straight length and 3.376" total length including tapered portion. You cannot see attachments on this board.

I misunderstood the original question. The seal protector I posted dimensions for is for the inner primary/transmission shaft seal.

Here are the dimensions of my transmission seal tools:
Pre 2007 dimensions:
Protector sleeve
O.D. 1.005"
I.D. 0.950"
Step 1.975" deep
Inner I.D. 0.785"
Length 3.350"

Driver sleeve
Small O.D. 1.240"
Step 0.090"
Large O.D. 1.470"
I.D. 1.033"
Length 5.350

2007-up protector sleeve is the same, driver sleeve is bigger
Protector sleeve
O.D. 1.005"
I.D. 0.950"
Step 1.975" deep
Inner I.D. 0.785"
Length 3.350"

Driver Sleeve
Small O.D. 1.355"
Step 0.050"
Large O.D. 1.720"
I.D. 1.033"
Length 5.530"

I hope that helps

Ah thanks xlfan!
I was going to hit the lathe on the weekend but had visitors and didn't get to it. Lucky ;-)

And what are the measurements of that seal installer, if you dont mind me asking?

Thanks
Pauly

Hi xl fan,

Hate to hassle, but I wonder if you would please measure the driver? I'm particularly interested in the hole and step ID and also the step od, main I'd, and length.

Thanks again
Pauly

Thanks again @SP33DY,

I made them to your dimensions, and that's another thing ticked off the list!

Pauly did you do any drawings/Cadd or just scribble the dims down and work the lathe?

Gday FSG,
Just scribbled the dimensions. Why do you ask?

Thanks
Pauly

Nice job mate. And i hear the pain on $ parts in OZ

pauly

Thanks mate,
I'm pretty sure I screwed up the dimensions on the seal protector but the driver is good. Tool prices in AUS are redonkulous, but I understand why. With the price of transport, and exchange rate there's no option but to make them if you can. Pity the us government doesn't subsidize delivery like China does. These cost me about $50 to make.
I'm not doing the work for a number of months so will find out if I screwed up the seal protector then :-).

Thanks
Pauly

Found a little time so made the new seal protector to the _proper_ dimensions. Dont know how I screwed up the first ones  :embarrassed:

Thanks
