EVO with 113” S&S rebuild.

Had some unusual noise from my evo with the S&S put in years ago.
Sounded like collapsed lifter. So..... starting pulling the motor down.

More I got into it trying to figure out the problem more issues I found!

Time for a total engine rebuild.

Motor had gotten hot many times over the years, and I ran it pretty hard.
I'm not surprised after seeing the insides!

Oh yeah.  It was time.  you were lucky to not get stranded up the coast somewhere.

It used to be my long range bike back in the day.
Now I try to get 100 miles a month or so on it just to keep the oil circulating.

Fortunately I was only about 4 miles from home and nursed it back.

Bought the bike new in 1995 and quickly started with the upgrades!

It's a keeper!

Well it looked and sounded good when we met in 2015.

Yup, ran strong until it didn't!

Ran it through the gears up a long grade into 4th and the shift to 5th when it lost power and got noisy! LOL

Valve guides are toast, valves look ok.

New pistons, pinion shaft, bearings, etc.
Going to take some time to get all the parts.

Gives me something to do for a month!

The biggest thing with the 113 is the cases. Make sure you have them inspected. There can be problems you can't see.

Bruce has his crank cases there also. The old race motor seems to be a little different than my 113, especially the heads.

We will for sure check the cases as long as we're this far! We have a guy here that is pretty familiar with the evo's and S&S.

Ultima cases are the real deal for 113" replacements. :up:

Thanks, I have heard they have come a long way in QC over the years!
I'm not too sure the S&S parts are interchangeable with Ultimate though.
IE: flywheels, pinion shaft, pump, etc. etc.
Once we get things cleaned up and checked, we'll see.

I've had pretty good luck with S&S over the years including the crate motors and their sidewinder kits and would tend to stay with them.

This is not a high HP motor in the 1995, so I'm pretty sure just a good check on the rebuild will get me a few more years of reliability.

Ultima uses the same 1/4" longer pinion shaft in their 113" as S&S does in their 113". Ultima cases will accommodate the S&S assembly.

Update......

Parts are in, motor starting to come together.
Heads done, new guides.
Seats, springs, valves all look good.
Lower end with new pinion shaft, lower end bearings, wrist pin bushings.
Cases and lower end will be together soon.

I'm hoping the barrels will clean up to 20 over. Not too keen to do the 30 over.
If they require 30 over I will probably just get new barrels.

Picked up the motor today.

It took longer due to parts availability and transportation issues as nobody will ship to CA anymore!

Gotta wait on my buddy to get it back in the frame. :hug:

Mine is done.  I'm hung up on an IPB.  The BDL uses a 5205 that has been honed out about 1/4 thou.. The bearings I have are 0.004 over.. I'll setup my own.

Total cleanup and rebuild was in order.
Decided to replace the "mild" cam,

The bike is a solo ride and has plenty of power for me.
The clutch was marginal in the "before" state as I wanted the stock spring and added the extra plate friction pack. Clutch pull is easy for me and the bike is way fun in the twisties!

Got the bike buttoned up this morning.
Did a few heat cycles, checked for leaks, oil pressure, etc.

Went for a short ride for gas. If we get some dry weather later this week I'll get 100 miles on it and change fluids.

Only glitch I had was the plug wires were switched. Won't start that way!
My bad!

Everything thing else went together smoothly.
