I haven't seen wear on a hydraulic unit but this one has 80K miles on it. Very little depth but pretty rough. Is this the normal wear? I Haven't taken the Inner off yet to check it, waiting for the new pieces to show up before I go deeper to make it easier to remember... :emoGroan: You cannot see attachments on this board.

That's very normal.
You can get a pair of Cyco shoes # 9906SHOE ( Pack Of 2)
Or Feuling # 8078 Hydraulic Cam Chain Tensioner Pads (Drag Specialties # 0925-106)
Cyco's are bare, you need to fish the plungers out of the old shoes.
The Feuling's come with plungers in them.
I would recommend new chains, too. Just for cheap insurance.

Ah, so the pads ARE available. Of course HD says you have to buy a whole unit.  I assume the aftermarket last as long?

Thanks Ohio FSG! Can't be that hard to swap the plungers...

I haven't installed any Fueling shoes, can't say anything more than they are an available option.

I have installed a lot of Cyco shoes with no problems. They have run as long as, or longer than the o.e.m. shoes.

Heat up a nail and push the plunger out. The wear on the outer is pretty normal. My inner was almost gone with 10,571 miles on my 2005.

Was that the old style (non-hydraulic) one?

These were mine a couple of years ago (99 FLHT with conversion cams).  Also about 80K on these.  Wear was about the same on the inside and outside one.  I replaced with the Fueling pads, which were red in color because the metal cylinder was already in.  later found out how easy it is to get the old cylinder out for reuse if you have a drill bit just a hair smaller in diameter.  Anyhow, I reused the chains as I did not observe any evidence of stretching (and that had not been the case earlier with the old silent chains).

I put in fueling pads 50k miles ago when I changed cams. Engine is apart now. Outer pad looks about the same as the OP pic. Inner one has almost no wear marks at all. Go figure. I have seen reports of issues with the Fueling pads but mine were good. I can post a pic if anyone is interested.
No one else put you on the road you're on. It's your own asphalt.

A set of Fueling pads just arrived (Cyco not available around here) so I, for one, would like to see them. Inquiring minds need to know.
