I've got an 08 night train with a chain drive installed, I bought it to ride frequently and don't want to be making adjustments on a weekly basis. Looking to go back to a belt system. I was going to get a 31t trans pulley (new), and a 68t rear pulley from an old sportster... what tooth count belt would I need? Is there anything needed to get the sportster rear pully set right on a softail (spacers/shims)?

Thanks

Search is your friend. Look up the belt part number on the HD site. They tell you the tooth cout there, as well search this site with that part number. FSG has documented many of the belts by size and tooth count.

Formula at the bottom of this page should help.
I'm guessing 134, just because that's the one size HD doesn't offer... :emsad:

I think you're right about 134 tooth.
Gearing wise its a small change, about a 6.5% reduction.

You cannot see attachments on this board.

No old Sportsters used a 68T rear pulley in my mind 😁

IIRC, the 08 Night Train used a 200 rear wheel and quite a lot of rear pulley offset, which 04 and up Sportsters didn't. My guess would be a spacer somewhere between 1" to 1.5" for the rear 68T Sportster pulley on the Night Train. A spacer is definitely needed.

Night train had a 70 tooth pulley originally, the pulley was pretty flat, think the offset was in the wheel hub, actually thinking of going 30-70 on my slim and was looking at night train pulleys as a possible donor item.

I went 29 (it was on sale) 70 (stock) on my super glide and I love it. It really makes a difference.

Even better 👍
I did the 30-70 on my 06 wideglide, made it much sharper that's for sure.
You got me thinking now haha.

I have an old 30t trans pully I never put on anything. The stock train belt was 20mm and the sportster pulley's are 1". I don't know if I like that 1/4" of lateral free play room... I don't have a belt for this bike so I'm buying one regardless. If I go for the 68/30 couldn't I use a 133t 1" belt? Or I could just go back to a stock train pulley and do 66/30 and get a 20mm 132t belt.

The 30/68 combo feels decent ( I like the 30/70 better, personally), and I'd get the HD belt that fits the rear pulley you will be using.

This is a mild 124" that'll see 100+ mile cruising days at 80-85mph.

Thanks, so just to clarify, if I'm reading right,  to go from an oem 32T/68T set up to a 30T/68T combo by just swapping out the trans pulley, would you need a 134T rear belt?

Thanks

Did you work out the belt size you needed for the 30/66 combo?  Is it the 132T belt?

I am also looking for the right belt for this combo on a late TC softail.  OEM size belt is 133T OEM for the stock setup of 32T/66T.... So if I go from a 32T trans pulley down to a 30T pulley, will I need a 132T belt or a 134T belt?

In other words, will I need to go up or down in rear belt tooth count with this change?

Thanks

Smaller pulleys = less teeth.

Smaller pulleys = less teeth.

Thanks, so 2 less teeth on the trans pulley would equal 2 less teeth on the belt?

That would make it a 131T belt?
