My 1974 XLCH has stock generator, regulator and a new battery. Is there any harm in clipping a battery tender on the leads coming off the battery? I don't want to harm the ancient electrical system. Do I need to polarize the generator every time battery is disconnected?  Thanks

You do not need to polarize it if the battery is disconnected, the battery tender is a good idea.  Buy a good brand, Battery tender, Optimate, CTek are some of the good ones.
