I have a few sets of cylinders that I need to store, for how long I'm not sure. I've been using plain jane ATF to keep them oiled after washing the bores. Does anyone use something they consider a better lubricant / rust inhibitor for storing newly machined surfaces? I like the ATF as it's thin and seems to adhere well.

I found this on a quick search.  I worked in the shop for our provincial highway maintenance ministry and the body shop used to coat the floors and other surfaces with boiled linseed oil.  It flashed off quickly and the salt and moisture effects from parking in heated stalls after sand and salt operations was totally abated.

I would use some fogging oil.  Its made for exactly what you are doing.

Good old WD40 then just throw a shop cloth towel over them. I don't think that wrapping them in plastic is a good idea.
Anybody who tries to tell you that the press is the enemy of the people is just that.

I use fogging oil, both in and on the cylinders, drop in a desiccant pouch & then plastic bag, in to the box, and on the shelf. ( to be discovered by the archaeologists ;) )
Ignorance is bliss, and accuracy expensive. How much of either can you afford?

Actually almost any oil will work.I just wash them in warm soapy(Dawn)water before I use them.

Thanks guys. I think I'll try some fogging oil. And I do have a bag of small descants desiccants that I use with firearm storage.
