I did get a bad big crank from battery mart last year.  It had replaced a 4 year old deka that had started cranking that I thought was a little "slow".  Sent it back to battery mart and they replaced it.  I did have to pay a little because it was pro rated.  I think I will buy locally from now on as its easier to deal with a bad one.  That said, that was the only new bad one I ever encountered.

I don't use a tender in the summer.  I figure I would rather have it fail in the garage versus being away from home.  In the winter I have 5 batteries (boat, camper, bikes) and I rotate a tender between them every few weeks when I think about it.

My old harley batteries get rotated to my lawn tractors.  I have one 11 years old that is still starting one of my tractors.
