Anyone out there know what the normal engine oil operating temp. should be?
just rebuilt '80-80in. FLH shovelhead, and breaking it in,got less than a 100 mi. on it.
and the temp has been running at about 225-230 degrees.. was wondering if that is normal...or not......

thanks in advance, Handlebar mike

Guess it depends on temp outside.  My '82 runs about 200-235 at 75 degrees or above and about 180-200 below 75.  Unless its really cold where you are I wouldn't worry about temps you're getting.

is this the temp in the oil tank?

It will run cooler after the rings seat.

A fresh rebuild will hotter til every part has been seated and finds its happy place,,,as stated the rings will get hot til broken in..You can check your timing as well, bein retared will help it start BUT it will make it run hot...An oil cooler and good oil is a good thing for shovels too...

That is pretty warm for an 80-80.  Check timing and carb jetting.  It should also run cooler in a few more miles.

I've got an 80 FLT 80 inch, when I first rebiult engine complete it ran around 200 judging by the oil tank gage, then after about 500 miles break in it ran mostly 180 all day long (except in traffic)
now after around 25,000 miles or so it mostly runs at 200-210 at oil tank gage. I've got an oil cooler.
Reading the other posts I don't think I'm running too bad. Some days I'm climbing from 800ft sea level to around 3500 ft. over a 30 miles distance, a bit of a workout but the temps stay OK.
