starter problems

73 chopper was kick only added a starter and it won't work jump solenoid and starter spins but solenoid don't kick out and it is new to! Any ideas? not running a starter relay but I'm gonna wire in a newer small plastic style next.theres not much to the wiring a hot from ign. to circuit breaker to batt . a white from ign. to button the other button wire to solenoid.starter cable to lower post on solenoid and upper solenoid cable to batt.positive  and I put a ground on starter also!??? I f anyone has any ideas please let me know thanks!

the solenoid plunger must move the bendix drive to engage the clutch ring.check for binding or bent pivot arm etc.Salty
