Does anyone know which gear the speed sensor takes its "readings" from?  How many teeth does it have? (97 sportster 883)

pickup is on fourth gear and there is a magnet on the side of this gear ,hopefully all the teeth are there LOL sorry I don't know but you can buy a box to install between the pickup and speedo to calibrate if this is what you are looking for
Keep your feet on the pegs and your right hand cranked

Thanks doc.  Nope, for some goofy reason, I made an electronic device (toy) that counts and stores the number of pulses per second on an SD card.  I was wondering why there were so many pps coming from the speed sensor, even at low speeds.  Either the sensor is counting the teeth, or there is something wrong with my little electronic toy.

The VSS used on the Sportsters is similar to that used on the Big Twins and it will be counting teeth on the 4th gear.

Just reading up on an '04 Sporty and see that it's sensor is mounted on the rear of the engine crankcase behind he starter motor assembly.
The sensor circuitry is that of a Hall-Effect sensor triggered by the gear teeth of 5th gear on he transmission mainshaft.

Is a '97 the same, IDK.

Since final drive sprocket is mounted to 5th gear on both Sportster and Big Twins (with 5-speed transmissions), I would presume that the Speed sensor have to read the 5th gear.
