HOLMES

Hello all,

I have stripped threads on one hole on my knucklehead. Do I use a heli coil? I used a pitch gauge on the bolt threads and it seems to be an odd ball thread that I can't find, 7/16 - 16. Any thoughts to fix it properly would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Neil.

Your right on the bolt size and pitch 7/16-16 and they make a helicoil kit to fix it but it's hard to find reasonably.  V-twin sells it and a couple of other places.  Maybe e-bay too.  The 7/16 - 16 repair kit can be ordered from tooldiscounter.com.  I have it listed as Helicoil # 5540-7 and it was $47.44 a year ago or so.  I think V-twin was $115.  You only get 6 inserts with these kits but you can order some directly fron Helicoil in CT if you can convince them they have them.  It took a while to get toa the part numbers.  Bulk insert part number is Helicoil # 389-7-2CN656 or 6 pack number is R389-7-2.  You can also get the 7/16 - 16 tap cheaply from MSC or e-bay if you need to chase other threads.

Kit worked out fine.  Tapping the old cast iron was easier than I expected.
