Anyone ever had an oil pump go?

Well, I'm still in the war    Maybe it's just something I never noticed before, but are you supposed to hear the pump scavenging when you pull the dipstick with the engine running?   If I kick the wheel in gear while it's on the lift with the dipstick out, a growl comes from the oil tank, is that normal?
