I have a 07 Electra Glide Std. I'm coming up on 10,000 mil service. I have only used Harley Syn3 motor oil.
I want to try to keep the temps down. First, will I void any warranty by changing brands of oil ?
Second, what would be a good choice ? Can someone help with this?
Thanks
WildBill

Add an oil cooler to reduce temps along with synthetic oil.

Simple answer: No

You might want to give RedLine 20-60HD a try. I, along with others, have found it to also quiet down the top end when the engine gets really hot like in summer and/or traffic.
Thanks

They are all good oils and none will void your warranty.

Thought I would say Hi to Earl, had not seen him in a few months.
Well ok, maybe a couple of weeks.
I use HD 20-50 W and see nothing wrong with it.
Aside from the inflated price, I am thinking about
Penzoil 20-50 for air cooled engines next spring.
BTW, did I mention Hi Earl ?

Rob; i've been using Penz. 20-50 in my 06 Streetglide for a couple of years now with very good luck. one trip out west yielded temps. of 26 degrees in the morning for the low and 112 degrees crossing Hoover Dam on a Sunday. idle 3 min, move 3 feet. that way all the way across. i/we never shut em off and they never let out one tick. all in all it was hot as hell for most of that trip. same oil was in my 05 Deuce, the OL's 06 Standard, her 06 Heritage and now in her 09 Streetglide. none of them have ever used more than 1/2 qt. per 5-6k change nor did the oil ever smell burned. (damn, hers is due for an oil change again too)

Are you thinking with you "dip-stick" Jimmy?

RedLine in primary and tranny, Amsoil in engine. Best combo have found yet.

ANY NAME BRAND SYN OIL IS FINE. PERIOD  :idea:
Whatever you can find the cheapest and most available.....which would probably be Mobil 1.
My list would be:
1. Amsoil (like the way it performs)
2. Mobil 1 (cost)
3. Redline (only because of cost and easily available---not mail order)
4. Any other brand
5. H-D

Amsoil 20-50 since new!!
I run it in the motor, trans, and primary.

Amsoil sucks,,  go with Mobil-1   :up:

Michrider

I'll bet if you put an Amsoil sticker on a bottle of Walmart Supertech 20w50, the bike's oil would run 20 degrees cooler, not ping, start easier, and lift the tire in 3rd.   :hyst:

GaryD

Score so far.

Amsoil = 5
Redline = 4
Mobil 1 = 3
H-D = 1
Penzoil = 1

Buy whatever is on sale and you can't go wrong. I prefer motorcycle specific oil, but some on HTT say there's nothing wrong with using car oil.
No need to bash one oil over another ----they're all good and none will harm your engine. I have never heard or saw an engine problem caused by using the correct grade engine oil.

I guess I just don't understand human behavior.
We spend whatever it takes to change the look and feel of our bikes....even if it is @ retail, but when it comes to what we use to protect our investment it should be based on the cheapest price???  :wtf:
Oh well I guess I have a lot left to learn,

Cheapest price doesn't mean a cheap product. What I meant is why pay $12/qt of Red Line when you can get the same Red Line qt for $8. Who wants to pay retail?

heck mine does that after I wash it  :hyst:

look, no one can deny the FACT that Amsoil is a top notch product, if you do then you know absolutely nothing about oil.
Not getting into this is better than that....just sayin

I tend to agree with GaryD on most of his assessment. One I will give MHO on is motorcycle specific oil. On a TC I feel that is out the window. The TC engine is only an engine and the same for primary and Trans. The oil does not mix in these areas. Now other bikes that use a commom sump...OK they do need motorcycle specific oil because the oil has to do engine work and clutch work with the same oil. They need to be formulated differently.
I use Valvoline 20W50 100% Syn. car oil in the engine, Transmission fluid in the clutch Pack (Primary) and Gear oil in the Gear box. I can find them any where and at a reasonable price. Never had an oil related problem.

Dan, I use different oil in each hole also. Amsoil 20/50 in the engine (just changed to winter wt. 10/40). Then Amsoil Severe Gear 75/140 in the trans and H-D Formula+ in the primary.

ok, guess i kinda feel the same way Bob does about these oil conversations but in a different way. now i'll change the engine oil in my 03 Duramax (bought new) every 5-9k, depending on how hard i need to use the truck, and it's never used one drop of Rotella oil between changes. i've changed the tranny (Allison) filters 2 times in 200k, topped the fluid level off and called it good because the fluid was still cherry red, didn't smell burned and still shifts like new, the transfer case fluid 1 time in 200k and the lube in the front and rear axle has never been changed but neither have ever leaked or made any kind of noise. the truck has pulled a goose neck loaded with approx. 10-15K lbs. for at least 85% of that 200k and it also has a performance box to add more power/potential abuse to the drivetrain. oh, and it stickered for over twice the cost of a new Harley. now i have to ask m'self...does my Harley make so much more power than my truck does that i need to change the oil(s) more often? is the Harley trans. abused more than the front or rear axle in my truck (essentially the same gear lube)? do i put more torque thru the Harley primary/trans. than is put thru the f/r axles, the trans or t/c in my truck? that would equal a really BIG hell no!! so yes, i change the oil in the bike every 5-7K (only because it's an air cooled motor) and maybe the primary (atf type-f) every 20-30k but the tranny? nope, it's never been changed, the RLSPH still looks like new and the trans. still shifts/sounds like it did when new. ok so i drifted off into left field but my point is, i guess i'm just not into wasting money, or oil resources, where/when it's not really needed and why do we tend to change the oil, filters, ect. on our bikes more than on the vehicles we drive everyday that transport our families and/or help us make a living? are our Harley's really that fragile? yup, i'm probably off in left field but it sure makes dollars and sense to me and if you think the people who make/sell the oil products don't know this and UP the price....welp, you're a bigger dreamer than i am.
