No Problem,

I built an 88" Shovel FXE with S&S wheels/pistons, Branch heads, a Sifton 468S cam and S&S Super B back in 73. Also had one of the first Andrews close ratio 4-speed gearsets. That's when you spoke to George or Margie personally on the phone, bought the parts and did the assembly yourself. No just buying an engine or other stuff that bike would fly 130+ with my wife on the back and yep I still have her, but not the Shovel.

I'm still sorry I sold that Shovel and kept my wife, but my EVO is faster and she doesn't ride anymore

John,

I'm running the Jerry Branch stage 4 heads with matching 10:5 to 1 pistons with the Andrews EV 59 cam, Mikuni 42 etc. I think the specs on that cam are 560 or 570 lift with a 250 / 255 duration. This set up works extremley well. had it dyno a couple of years ago. Specs were at 105 torque and 97 H.P. This is on a 99 Softail Custom (last year EVO motor)...I've literally had no problems with this set up for almost 10 years now. Starts and runs great. The cam in my opinion with this set up is probably the most anbody should want to go with short of full drag race around town. You canactually feel the cam lope at lower speeds.

Got the bike back, and it screams from 2500+. It's literally scared the crap out of me a couple times in traffic-the cam comes on that fast. It's a fun ride!!!

Honed cylinders, new rings, VThunder EVL-5010NG cam, TP forged roller rockers, SE adjustable pushrods, SE evo heads mildly worked, stock HD lifters, new cam bearing, cometic top end gasket kit (040), SE 6k RPM module, Mikuni 42 carb yet to be dyno tuned, but currently running like a raped ape 165 main, V&H propipe, Dyna module on the way as well as an edelbrock nitrous kit. Blows the 101HP Ultra away...

John, Glad to see you found a combo that you like without loosing any body parts.   :hyst:

John,
Watch out for that nitrous stuff as we are rebuilding an Evo sporty as we speak. The extra pressure created seems to take it's toll eventually. The gaskets were blown out and the blowby was pushing extra oil out the breather and lower end. We also went with a lower CR on this engine as well.

Flat Dog

Thanks Buddy-I may just turn around the NOS on ebay-I think it will be way too freaking much. I did buy every other nozzle they make, however. The current combo almost yanks my arms out of their sockets. Thanks for the heads up on that V Thunder-it's freaking sweet!!! I bet I could pull oak stumps...

Choke is not even really necessary-the guy ported the heads so well that flow is just in freaking credible. He usually only does dirt bikes too-branching out a little....

I don't think we can embed videos here, so here is a quick crappy video of the bike firing and just off choke.

Pardon the heavy breathing, gum chewing, and the wrecked garage.

John,
Just looked at the video after I sent the PM, the bike sounds pretty stout. Get her broken in properly, change the fluids and then get her on the dyno, or come down here and let my guy set her up after the Dyna ignition is installed. You can stay at my place if ya need to.

I'll hook up with you after that, or when I'm in Orlando and then we'll see who's got what. I think I've got the edge weighing only 155 .

Flat Dog

You've got me by 100#, Buddy! If I lose some major weight, I might have a chance at the drag strip...LOL

John.
Double check the specs on the pushrod adjustment on your V-Thunder cam card. When we set mine up we used the standard HD factory adjustment specs and the exhausts were hanging open. After looking at the V-Thunder specs on the cam card, we noticed the adjustment preload specs were supposed to be 1.5 turns. I called V-Thunder to confirm that those numbers were correct. We readjusted the valves to 1.5 which mean't backing the preload off about 1 full turn. Solved the problem immediately, just something to double check before ya wind her up!

The 5015 seems to come in at about the same RPM range as your 5010, perhaps a little later. I'll have to look into this with V-Thunder a little further. Need to see if less duration may be the answer to gaining a little more power.

If you want to really "freshen it up", suggest the 10:5 to 1 pistons, EV-59 cam (570 lift, 255 duration), Mikuni 42 carb, and good set of pipes. I'm not familiar with the SE heads. I have the Jerry Branch stage 4 set with the matching 10;5 to 1 pistons...had it Dynoed a couple of years ago at 97 h.p. and 101 torque.

Flat Dog

The SE heads are more of a 1/2-wide open throttle design, but with this combo I have to really hold on at 2800 plus, with 3000 really being where the big balls come in. I am pretty happy with the setup for street use, altho I'm sure dyno time and fine tuning are necessary still.

I've decided against going with the bottle setup, and am kicking myself for wasting the $. Maybe I can get rid of it someday.

(A) Told ya so as mine is a rocketship! Mine were fully ported, but they really make some power for supposedly crappy heads, huh?

(B) Yep, get about 500-600 miles on her, change all the fluids and then get her to the Dyno shop ASAP!

(C) , Good Decision!

Flat Dog

Heheh...yeah, a whole lot of the porters tell everyone that SE heads are crap so they don't lose so much $, methinks. This little slammed Dyna is like 2 wheeled viagra, and makes me want to sell my twinkie.
