xr1000 numbers query

hi got a query .have what i think is a complete xr motor.problem starts with the engine cases, the numbers arent matching what the info say they should ie model number.have read that the stud pattern on the cases was made to fit the stud pattern on heads as the studs pass thru the heads,barrels and into the cases which is what mine does, this being different to other model sportsters.true or not ? do xl cases fit xr heads/barrels? any info greatly appreciated

The stud patterns are different.  I've heard XL cases can be modified to fit the XR heads and barrels.  I think it involves plugging/welding up the holes and relocating them.  This is just hearsay and I don't know if this is true as I've never seen it done.
