I bought a used 48 mic off e-bay that has a needle # installed I can't identify. It is a J8-CFY15-97 needle (std is listed as a J8-8CFY02-97). The carb also has a 175 main jet installed instead of the standard 190. The pilot jet is a standard 25 size. Any idea what needle this is?? I can only find one slide listed in the parts manual on the Sudco site and thats a TM42/08-3.0.

John,

I will double check my spare Mik. 48 needles and see what part numbers they have on them and give you my baseline setup that should get you in the ballpark.

It's a 97... The listed needle (from what I've seen) is in error and is for an HSR45..

45 and 48 both use the same needle. J8-8CFY02 STD. in both

Admiral Akbar

They can but they don't. The 48s are longer

I should correct myself.. You can get away with a 45 needle in a 48. Not sure about a needle 48 in a 45...

I called the tech support guy at Sudco today. According to him Maxflow is right. The 8CFY02-97 listed in the literature (on both the Sudco and the Mikuni America websites) is a Mic 45 needle. The 8CFY15-97 is the correct needle for a 48 Mic. The needle for the 45 which was initially used in the 45 & the 48 is shorter. If you put the e-clip in the bottom groove on the 8CFY02-97 needle installed in a 48 Mic the needle will come compleatly out of the needle jet. If this happens it is possible the needle will jam and hold the slide wide open. At least that is what I was told today. Funny thing is that all the literature on both the Sudco and Mikuni sites still list the 8CFY02-97 as the correct needle. Since this seems to be a liabality and safety issue I would really like to know for sure which is correct. The needle in my Mic 48 (8CFY15-47) is 85.62 mm long. Can someone measure the lenght of a needle from a Mic 45 mm carb. This should be a 8CFY02-97 if this guy from Sudco was correct and it should be shorter.

I get 3.192 inches for the 45 and 3.364 for the 48...

While sudco may say that the needle pulls out, I checked it on the middle groove and it was OK..

While the stock 48 needle had 5 grooves, the replacement needles only had 3. 1 and 5 was missing.

The lenght on you're 48 needle checks with mine. Sudco said that if the shorter needle (8CFY02-97) for the 45 mm carb was installed in the 48 mm carb and the e-clip was in the bottom groove (not the middle one) the shorter needle for the 45 mm carb could come out of the needle jet on the 48 mm carb. The part number listed on both the Sudco and Mikuni sites as the correct needle for a 48 mm carb was wrong and was the shorter 45 mm needle according to Sudco. Thanks for you're help. This all started because I bought a used 48 mm carb and checked the jetting against what I thought were the correct specs online.
