Springer front brake cable

I have Bates levers for clutch and brake, clutch is ok, the cable fits into the lever nicely, but the brake is a different story. I have a VT cable but it doesn't fit into the lever properly....falls out, is there a ferrel or cable end i am missing, like there is on the clutch cable end. I have checked various books and come up with am OEM part number ...45109-30, is this the missing ferrel??
The cable outer is not finished off with anything, just a bare end....any help would be great.

Try a Barnett cable. It has a metal ferrule to fit into the hand control bracket.
