Can anyone tell me what the spacer thickness  and the sprocket offset needs to be?  Switching from belt to chain, never liked the belt anyway, because of breakage.  Offset of sprocket needs to be correct or it will cause to much tension on chain causing premature wear.

Thanks

I did the conversion about a year ago and have been very pleased. Maybe L- or Cyclemiler will chime in as they did all the research and I just bought the parts. L- is looking into using a spacer and a straight sprocket on the rear.

I believe it's 1/2 inch offset for the trans sprocket with an FXR dished rear wheel sprocket on a FXR and FXD

Yup, agree on the 3 guyz kit. Nice pieces. You can try call in them or the guys at Zippers as they kit kits for most bikes.

Mix01,

There are more ways to do it now.  Some "kits" don't give you what you really need.  I use the PBI .500 offset sprocker on the transmission.  These can be found at Jireh Cycles for far less than the $80 -100.00 prices you will see. Chains, well they range from really bad to pretty damn good.  I have not used this one but it is my next chain:  http://www.1tail.com/sa/p/Driven_USA_530_MVXZ_Drive_Chain_-_RED_BLUE_YELLOW_or_PURPLE.htm   You will have a hard time trying to beat the 530 ZZZ chain.  Check the tensile strength.  I get chain in the 120 link and wind up with about 114 links on my FLHR.

Sprockets.  The ones that come with the Zippers kit are from PBI.  They have not told me this but PBI has.  They are aluminum and very good.  They are straight even though their catalog has a part number for the off set one.  They don't have it.  They have a flat sprocket with a spacer and this is okay.  But the chain is terrible.  Period.  I am using a flat sprocket from Sprocket Speacilists.  I use their .220 spacers as they have the correct diameter hole for the wheel.  I also use spacers from other sources and have had the holes enlarged to 2.215.  and I have these machined down to different widths.  I am still trying to get the perfect alignment.  I am within a few thousands right now. If you get a steel sprocket from say Jireh or other places they have the smaller hole and you have to machine it out.  Same way with sprockets from PBI for the rear.  BUT, if you use a flat sprocket from PBI or a flat one from Sprocket Specialists you can use the .220 spacers with the 2.215 diameter hole for the wheel.

You should run 530 chain and forget the 630 stuff.  A 530 chain should be about .350 or so inside diameter.  The dished STEEL sprockets and the  flat STEEL sprockets all measure about .275 width on the tooth.  Kinda small but they work well. The PBI transmission sprocket is cut to the correct width.  Sprocket Specialists rear sprockets are about .320 wide and so are PBI.  Both are good sprockets.  I don't want to get into spacing now but I can assure you that a spaced sprocket holds up as well as a dished one.

When you get the "kit" set up you are usually limited in tooth count.  I have the primary gears for 3.37 ratio with the stock belt and sprocket set up.  I went with a 23 tooth transmission and 51 tooth rear for a final ratio of 3.41 and the speedometer is about a needle width off, nothing for me to worry about. I wanted very close to 3.37 and it works for me.

Cyclemiler and I have been down the road on this and he is doing a lot of horsepower and torque through a 120 inch engine.  My friend in Texas has been running a chain set up on his 100+ Nighttrain now for years and we are all pleased.  Cyclemiler had posted the chain details before and I have them somewhere printed out..... not stored in the computer but will try to find them.  If I went with a kit I would go with the Zippers but you get better results with piecing it together.

If you want or can use or want to try a 51 tooth steel, dished sprocket I can send you one if you pick up the postage.

I forgot to mention that Drag Specialty has a newer sprocket spacer with the larger wheel hole in it and in different widths.  I also didn't give the spacing as I am still trying to get the best alingment.  But two spacers, with a flat sprocket and spaced from .375 to .440  will get you down the road with a .500 offset transmission sprocket on a FLHR.  Like I said I am still doing spacer work with the sprockets that are now .320 wide in the tooth area.
