Is there a special tool or something needed to remove the friction discs and plate?

Yes.  You need a spring compressor.  I just replaced my clutch and bought the tool from Dennis Kirk for like $40.  I put the SE extra plate clutch in and it was a piece of cake.  Just make sure you buy everything you need (gaskets, o rings, shifter seal, etc) before you start.  Also, remember to soak the friction plates in fluid before you install.  Good luck.

Check this out - it is a complete kit with tool.  Hope it helps.
