Anybody know for sure what mainshaft is used in a late -83 FLHS (chain front, rear belt).  Is it the 35039-70 or is it the 35039-84?

lewy, the 35039-70 is for a chain and the 35039-84 is definitly a beltdrive shaft but there is also another beltdrive shaft with another #, maybe 86 and it has a different key for it if my memory serves me. the 84 is like and inch or more longer than the older chaindrive one. i broke a few of em on my '85 fxsb  :embarrassed:. i wonder what # the first sturgis had in it.........
build it, bust it.....figure out why

Thanks Bill,  that's what I thought.  The other belt drive shaft you are referring to is 35039-85.  It can be used in place of the 35039-84 but uses a different key 37523-85.  I don't know the part number for the early FXSB mainshafts either.  I will be doing more research to find out so I can get a handle on all the different shafts used for the rear belt models.  These are difficult models to nail down certain parts for.
