In fixing the gearbox malady we ended up pulling the front cylinder head to replace a broken exhaust stud. Ordinarily I'd be thinking that will need re torquing at around the 500 mile mark. Does that sound right?

Hello mate,
If you look at the torque process it involves bringing the head up gradually to torque and then putting an additional 1/4 turn on the bolts to make them tight. This last procedure does not have a torque setting. This means that you can't retorque them at 500 miles, and shouldn't need to either.
So after all that work now is the time to ride and enjoy!
cheers
Andy
If you can't fix it with a hammer and a roll of Duck tape then you're in trouble
