Mikuni HS40 Choke will not hold

The Mikuni HS40 choke on my 1988 FXRS-Sp will not hold in the on position (out).  The motor vibration causes it to jump back to off. I once saw a post on how to correct this, but a search didn't turn up anything.

Hope someone knows about this fix.  I'm getting tired of using a clothes pin behind the choke knob.  :crook:

I know there is a clip under the rubber boot that keeps the cable out.
Pull the boot back by the knob and see if there is the clip in the slot.

I have the HD choke on my Mikuni 42 and it has a plastic tightner on the
cable where it's attached to the frame on the left side.  You can adjust
the cable tension with it.  Be careful as they are easy to break & then you
have to get a new cable.. (guess how I know :)

I also have a Mikuni with the same problem, didn’t have much luck tightening the cable so I hold the knob out with my hand while starting bike.

Well I checked out my cable and found there is no boot at the knob end, just the bracket attachment.  I now recall Mikuni changed to a different choke cable assembly with their HSR series carbs. So I'm still hoping someone knows about a fix for the old-style design.
