Can't get to the Harley shop for a few days and want to get this thing up and running. What can I use in the primary off the shelf at the lacal Walmart or Auto parts store?

You can use ATF fluid, 10W40 or 20W50 standard motor oil. Really almost any type of motor oil will work. I've been using type F trans fluid for 140,000 miles.

I use type F ATF, too, but any motor oil without the starburst on the label will do.  That's generally 10W40 and up.

Just make sure the oil doesn't say "Energy conserving" on the bottle. If it does, it has friction modifiers in it. Doesn't play well with the clutch.

Yup, I agree.
Remember, you can sleep in your car, but you can't drive your house.

i normally use type F ATF in my own 1990 FXR

gear oil in the trans and 20w-50 in the engine

makes leaks easy to find as well
