Rear shocks on 96 1200?

My wife's shocks look like they are set to the stiff es setting, what wrench do you use to change this a special spanner wrench or what?

There is a special spanner wrench tool for that job and they don't cost much, but I don't have one (never do when I need it) so I just use a rag and a pair of BIG channel lock pliers.
