I have a 03 Sportster 883 that doesn't want to idle, when riding you can feel surges of power. Removed rear spark plug wire while running, no change to engine sound. Have continuity in the spark plug wire, about 5 ohms. Switched spark plugs and no change. I don't think the rear cylinder is firing at all times. Have any ideas why?

do a compression and leak down test first
Keep your feet on the pegs and your right hand cranked

I agree.
Betcha' you have a valve-seating issue.

Before you go to far you can check the compression, but also make sure you carb is cleen and you intake seal are good. The gas we have today is doing a number on rubber parts. Been running into this alot lately.
