I'm very partial to Hylomar these days.  Haven't used it on base gaskets though....yet.

Unless you are using the steel gaskets, a little Hylomar goes a LONG way! I use it on all fiber gaskets unless it has a bead of sealer on it.

The last base gaskets I used were Cometic coated steel type (stacked). Those went on absolutely dry per my indy.
