I posted this in Tech Tips as well..

There are some nice magnetic tools out there (Jim's, and I think George's Garage makes one) that hold lifters to keep them from falling in the cam chest when installing tappet blocks. Good ole Harbor Freight sells them too, for 3 bucks. The round ones work real well. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=95942

I have a set of spring loaded ones leftover from my Aircooled VW days. They work perfectly.

Figured out the rattlesnake egg thing out of desperation one day, glad to see I'm not the only one to figure it out.  Haven't tried the round balls yet but the "oval" ones work great if you put them in the opening and let them grab the lifter then let the tops click together.  Inexpensive solution that works.
