Thieves..... They broke into my place a few days ago and got my computer  didn't have any backup so I lost
everything all the info that I had saved from this site GONE. I guess the main reason for saying something is
BACKUP all your info. I was going to do this but was not in a hurry because computer was in good health....
didn't take into consideration the theft factor. A couple of weeks ago someone had posted something about a
computer backup gizmo... of course I saved the info in my favorite's THAT was on my computer    does anyone
have that website?  I'm sure I'll be asking for other sites too.

Take care,
crazy joe.

That thread was January 14 posted by 04customking.  Sorry about the loss. You just convinced me to back up my system.

Thanks  littlefrank   that's the one (don't think I like Vista)
I had been thinking about it for weeks   like I said I didn't think
about the theft factor.

Joe, Sorry to hear about your computer.  How much can that be worth on the black market unless they want SSN and credit card numbers.  You didn't mention their bothering your bike, glad to hear THAT!

PC
Too much horsepower is almost enough.

HIPPO

This is old but it gives you an idea as far as what can be done with settings and file / folder encryption to make the crooks life harder.

I have Microsoft Home Server for backups and it works very good.  I also have a Windows Live account, and can can store my emails (Hotmail) and have 1GB of online storage.  MS now has 5GB for free, on Live Mesh, and you can sync your PC and some MACs, as well as a MS Mobile device..... https://www.mesh.com/Welcome/default.aspx

I am still waiting for MS to start charging me for all of this stuff.....But I have had the same Hotmail account for over 13 years now, so maybe they like me.  ;-)

Joe,
Sorry here too about your loss.
Thieves are basically stupid, you might want to try this if they plug it in...........Send an e-mail to your stolen computer, advertising that you will pay big bucks for (your model and the widows OP system that you had) as you are in business and yours is about to crash.
Immediate reply requested !!
Make up a good spiel, one that they will believe.
Since you're on another computer now, with a different ISP, they might just get back to you.
Hand that info over to the cops (if they do) and a retrieval might be in the stars.
They are stupid as you know and anything is possible.
Had my house broken into a year ago.
The fact remains that it isn't so much as to what they got but they invaded your privacy, your abode, the stolen stuff is second thought.
Been there and it ain't easy to take.

Just a thought, it worked for me after my theft in another way.

Everyone wants to change the world but, no one wants to change the toilet paper.

Dennis The Menace

Panzer, good idea.

I had my car broken into about 14 years ago, they stole my cell (expensive back then), and my stereo with CD changer (also expensive back then).  I called my cell phone and the f-ers anwered it!  I could hear loud noise in the background, but couldnt tell just where it was.  Kept asking for Joe (not my name) and they kept saying wrong number and hung up.  Finally they quit answering, and I gave up on finding them.  Let the cell phoine company know, and phone could no longer be used anywhere....dumbasses learned the hard way on that one.

Now, if you have a cell and it has a GPS, it can be tracked easily by the carrier and police, down to the nearest 50 feet.  So, if the cell phone is stolen, along with other stuff, you may be able to get them tracked and busted.  I wouldnt care much if my cell is stolen, but if other things are taken too, especially if my cell was in my Harley (yeah, I often leave it in the glove box), I am gonna do what I can to find the bastards and hope I get to them before the cops.

BTW, some of the phones with GPS you can track on the web yourself, so no need to call the cops....find the f-ers yourself and get yer stuff back.  DISCLAIMER-I am NOT advocating violence against thieves.  Honest.  No, really, I'm not.   lol

Dennis..........are you following me?
Everytime I put in a thread you're next in line.  :smilep:
I do know what you mean about going after the f-ers.
I got in my house, checked what this guy got, holstered a 32 and went looking for him.
From reports, I knew who did it.
I was looking for his car and if I found it and saw some of my things inside, well that guy wouldn't be walking.
Knee caps are great targets, then I'd call the cops.
He must have slipped on a bar of soap, would have been my excuse....maybe.
I wouldn't kill !!!
I didn't find him, but the cops did the next day and 98% of my things, two days later.
Still steamed about it though.......tough to heal.
You don't come in my house unless I invite you.
I now have a sign on the inside garage door saying, "If you believe that there is life after death, break in and find out for yourself".

Just had to vent a little.....all done!
Your turn Dennis...LOL  LOL

well if you are going with the sending an Email thing to your old account get a picture of the hottest woman you can find and send a match.com type message saying she (you) would love to meet him.

Molly

Not much to add other than sorry about the theft and I hope the f***er meets a lonely, painful and undignifed end.

I just put an alarm on my house, have numerous locks on the bikes, my tool chest chained to the bench, a baby monitor to keep an ear on things and, well, that's all actually. We can't shoot the f'kers so easily as it seems you can so we let the police find them and watch whilst the courts slap them with a wet tissue.

At least in the US it seems they get real jail time and have to blow Mr Big for the duration if they're to get out alive (or have I been watching too much TV?).

Phu Cat   Thats what I'm thinking.... I dont keep any of that stuff in my computer
(unless its in there and I don't know it)  All else is ok (few other things they got)

Panzer

Crazy,
You have your e-mail address don't you?
From another computer send it to your address, or get the cops to do it.
Easy, simple.
Now, and I mean now, change all of your passwords.......PRONTO!!
Hope you remember all of your sites, E-Bay, on line bank accounts, IM messaging, travel accounts, etc., ect..
REPEAT.........DO IT NOW !!
Everyone wants to change the world but, no one wants to change the toilet paper.

Panzer  Tell me how anyone can get my passwords if they where not saved on the computer
My email had passwords even hot mail when I logged onto the net (are passwords saved
automatically on computers)

Anyone else have feed back on this how about the administrator's?

HroadhogD1

I agree, change your passwords.   All it takes is some software and the information comes up to whoever uses it.  Don't take the chance-change your passwords.

Panzer

AMEN......nuff said.

crazy joe

Done    but still don't understand how they can do it   even asked a IT friend and a few people from
the sites that I have been on that use passwords .......     still changed the passwords to be safe.
Thanks for the advice.
