I'm replacing the exhaust on my '89 FXRS-Sp. The exhaust pipe gaskets that fit up inside the cylinder that I got at the local dealer are about 3/8" thick. My question is, over the span of the 3/8" thickness, they are thicker on one side, and they taper over the 3/8" span and are noticeably thinner on the other side of the gasket. I don't remember them being like that. The part number on the receipt says 65324-83B. I don't remember these gaskets being thinner on one side than the other. Did they change over the years? did the parts guy give me the wrong parts? (I'll google the pn)If these are the correct parts which side of the gasket goes in the jug? Thanks guys.

Yes, the OEM exhaust gaskets are tapered like that.  Thin edge out, towards the pipe.

What year did they switch from the narrow ones to the wider ones?  My wife's '85 has always had the narrow ones, but my '87 FLT is running the wider ones.
