Any reason the petcock filter screen material around the tube on the inside of the tank cannot be removed and install an inline fuel filter between the petcock valve and carb to take it's place? Just wondering if it would be better for maintenance, it could be changed quick and easy without having to empty the tank to clean filter screen.

Lakerat

Caused a fuel delivery problem on mine. Apparently, gravity wasn't enough to push the fuel through the filter when tank was less than half full. I put the sock back in and tossed the filter.

Keep the tank filter, it keeps crud out of the petcock. As Lakerat indicated, fuel delivery could be affected.
I run a clear in-line filter on the shovelhead (with the tank filter)- rarely is there any crud in the external filter. Good for trapping really tiny particles, that's about it.
