I have a 1982 FXR (put about 500 miles on it since buying) with the stock type rear wheel that takes Timken tapered bearings.  I think my inner hub spacer is too short.  I have the wheel on the bench.  I bench assemble the axl, bearings (un-greased), inner hub spacer, etc.  I add 3 other spacers to compensate for the swing-arm thickness and also the rear brake caliper mount so I can build the assembly 'out' enough to limit the amount of thread so I can torque the axl nut down.  The 3 spacers I used for compensating thickness of swing-arm and caliper mount are not exact, overall they are a little longer.  That doesn't matter though, right?

Is this right so far?

Now, as soon as I tighten the axl nut down to any torque at all, I lose all end play.  As in, only 10 pounds of torque = .000 end play.  I only have a harbor freight caliper, but I am getting a hub spacer length of 4.400.  HD book lists 3 lengths...
4.420
4.434
4.448

So, it would seem I have too short a hub spacer, correct?  And I should order the longest one and cut it down from there if need be???  1st time doing this, I appreciate anyone who can tell me if I'm doing it right, thanks

Julio

Yeah, you're too short.
You can either order the larger spacer, or get the shims. They're available from your dealer.
I think end play spec is .004"-.016". I shoot for .010" and have never had a problem.

thanks.  I don't know much about harley wheels--I thought the shimming was for a different type of wheel/sealed bearing set-up and with the stock '82 FXR style you had to get your results by having the proper length hub spacer...

So I misunderstood?  Cuz that would make my life a lot easier if I can just shim it and not have to dick around with ordering a hub spacer and then cutting it to length (if needed)....

Yeah, that's them. No problems using them.
You can get them from the HD dealer or E-Bay if you search the part number.

Any indy worth his salt, will have them in stock and be able to set the bearings for you in a matter of minutes.
