Have a chance to pick up a '84 FLH for what I think is a pretty fair price. But it has a 2004 S & S 80" motor with a just tuned Super E in it. The guy says it's only got about 1400 mi on it and that it runs strong. Never had dealings with S & S motors before. Any opinions or advice on this motor. Thanks

Forgot to tell you it's a shovelhead style

You're always gonna hear pro's and con's on any motor but pretty much S&S is the benchmark that everyone compares to. Lotta money spent on R&D, good customer support (you can actually call and talk to someone), and a long history of quality products. Some may balk at S&S's prices (very high) but since this bike already has the S&S motor then that's not an argueing point. Unless you're set on getting an original bike I would definately consider the S&S motor a plus.

Is it a full S&S motor or just cases?   They don't make a creat 80 ci motor, only 93 & 103. A lot of rebuilds will replace just cases, so you may want to look the heads over & see if theres any S&S insignias. They do sell all the parts seperatly though...Jeff

Even though they no longer list an 80" replacement motor they did still have one listed as late as the '07 catalog.

If you call S&S with the serial number on the motor, they should be able to tell you something about it, like if it was just a case when it left them, or if it was a complete motor.
