99 FXSTC Speedo

Just noticed saturday while ridin, the speedo stopped work and stuck on 40mph, trip meter out too. Say 100 yards, it came back on. noticed it a few times over sat & sun. Saturday before I started noticin this, took the cam cover off & put it right back on. could something in there screw up the speedo? Back in 99 had something similiar happening, techs put in a resistor on the speedo pick up. Thoughts?

turned out to be a short somewhere in the brake circuit. Pull the front brake, speedo goes out, circuit breaker clicks. it reset, hit the rear brake, speedo goes out, circuit breaker clicks. check tail light, handle bar switch, then rear switch and wiring down there. Was something down there, it's working now. made sure no wires where pinched.
