early and later pinion gears

does anybody know the difference from a early evo pinion gear and later pinion gear? i think this would get me going in the right direction. its clear my pinion gear dosnt fit properly on pinion shaft and the pinion gear i purchased was for earlier model. if i knew the ID was smaller in later models, that would make sense. any thoughts? I'm going to try to attach a pic

The early EVO shared pinion gear with late shovels, 78-89. They were tapered. 90-later were straight.

What flywheel setup do you have? Stock, aftermarket, 3-piece, 4-piece or 5-piece?

From picture it looks like cam gear is almost flush with gasket face, is that correct?
