when I set the time on the radio it stays correct for a few days and then resets itself like when the power goes off in a house and all the clocks reset to 12:00........    Any input is appreciated.

I am no clock expert, but back when the radio in my '88 FXRT would go off at odd times I was able to trace it to a loose ground wire that was just in front of the swing arm at that time.  Probably been moved since then.

The clock will reset if the battery voltage drops too low during cranking of the motor... some say it's a good indication of a weakening battery. I'm not saying that's whats happening for you, just offering another possibility.
