It seems like a lot of people are dying on Ski Slopes from a Head Injury. I wonder if some states will step in and make a mandatory helmet law for snow skiers. Just a thought.

Sportsterboy

I think they should ban it outright......to protect the skiers from themselves, of course.   :potstir:

Yea I've been wandering the same.  We have deaths from head injuries every year on our local slopes.  Ski patrol friend of mine was second on scene of a girl that hit a tree last week, fractured skull and not expected to make it, she had little experience and was not wearing a helmet.  We also lost a local experienced boarder that was wearing a helmet a couple weeks ago.  My kids wear helmets but you just never know.  Most of the accidents I hear about are from people skiing out of control and above their abilities.  I love tree skiing but you must pay attention.  Stupid hurts!

Big Dan

More people die in the bathtub/shower than anywhere else. I ain't wearin' a helmet in there, either.

That why I never shower alone. Safety in numbers. :smilep:

Maybe we should wear a helmet every time we step outside. Especially if there will be stairs ahead. Matter of fact we should probably wear them indoors too
you better love living life cuz dying is a pain in the ass

I did hear on the news that there was conversation about helmet laws for skiers.  Not sure if it was Canadian law makers thinking about this or State lawmakers in the USA.

In the home Drowning was the 5th leading cause of death behind Falls, Poisoning, Fires/Burns, Choking/Suffocation.

So wear your helmet when coming down the stairs or the steps of your front or back door.  :hyst:
These are the facts according to my opinions.

Harpo

There were a couple of doctor/science types discussing that very thing on the Larry King show yesterday in talking about the Natasha Richardson autopsy.  You can bet your next paycheck that some politician will introduce legislation to that effect shortly.  Isn't it wonderful that we have so many people that are much smarter than we are watching out for us like that?

FXDBI

They will never make helmets mandatory on ski hills in Canada been skiing 30+yrs and will never wear a helmet. Don't know when they gonna figure out they cant idiot proof the world. To many of them smart white collars trying to tell us all how to live.....and we see how smart they are just look at the economy....Bob

I wish Specialx1 and Jamlazyass would both take a shower.
These two think the gene pool is a place to swim.
Everyone wants to change the world but, no one wants to change the toilet paper.

experience......modern skis perform so well that it makes a novice skiier overconfident so that they think they can tackle the more advanced and more technical slopes but when faced with a situation on these slopes that requires real expert experience, they are in trouble and hit a tree or another skier....I guess it is the same with high performance rice rockets too.....

specialx1

No Thx Panzer, Jam told me things you do in the shower  :pop:

they aren't watching out for us - just watching out for the privileged class - Hollywoodites - but of course we will all benefit - yeah right - they didn't even talk about helmets when 'joe blow' was killed - as I said it is all about the privileged.

Too many of the other idiots are still trying to protect us from our selves!
It just makes me sick seeing where this country is going. We need less government, not more. Other countries are moving away from Communism, and socialism, cuz it don't work, and the good old USA keeps moving toward socialism.
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

specialx1

i,m gonna start my own little country!! Shedsville,no rules (well cept for few people n they know who they are)

Sonny Bono met up with a tree a few years ago. He pushed the California helmet law thru for us, right?

Panzer, how crowded is that shed? I'm kinda a big guy, wife keeps feeding me too much... :smilep:

I'm all for freedom of choice but when you hear about incidents like the one I mentioned above, I think a ski helmet law for minors may not be a bad thing.  This was a teenage girl on a church ski trip from Oklahoma and probably had very little or no instruction on the dangers of skiing,  helmet may have saved her from severe head trauma.  I've been skiing 30+ yrs and don't wear a helmet but I am an adult(well sometimes)and feel that should be my choice, a minor on the other hand........I'm sure this girl and her family could use a few prayers.

whitebagger1

Saw the news on the fall and death. Since helmets have come into play the people that monitor these things report that they do reduce head injury. The side effect is that the younger skiers are taking more risks and skiing and snowboarding at much higher speeds increasing the number of accidents. It's the helmet makes me invicibe syndrome. The actual death rate is up even though the head injury is down.

I just had an off topic thought (sorry).
Some years ago here in Oregon, they slipped in the mandatory helmet law piggybacked on a seat belt law. I read it at the time and noticed that there was also a mandatory helmet law for equestrians. Yup. Now if you look around here you will see everyone wearing helmets on bikes and seat belts in cages. You almost never see someone on a horse wearing a helmet. That law is not enforced and nobody even knows about it. Not only that but there is no helmet designed for equestrian use that I'm aware of.

Based on that last part I pose this question;
Would it be possible for a good lawer to get the helmet law repealed? It seems like it aint right that the same law effects motorcyclist but not equestians. Profiling?

wavlovr1

There are a large number of people in the US every year who do not die, but suffer head injuries anywhere from minor to really bad. The numbers for brain injury in the US are staggering. With all the Baby Boomers going Hog Wild on motorcycles, bicycles, bnow boards, and skiis, etc. I expect Brain injury to surpass even some of the major diseases in overall medical costs before long.

I suffered a minor TBI in 2004 and the costs in medical and lost income are over a million bucks... and I was wearing a helmet...  :gob:

Just Google Equestrian Helmets.  All kinds of them.

I work with firefighting helicopters and when  travel on a commercial flight I take my SPH5 / flight helmet as carry on so as to protect it from baggage handlers.  The flight attendant told me that I could not wear it on a commercial flight because it might cause a panic with the other passengers....
