Stock heads....can I install a .530 lift without being concerned with valve spring coil bind?

Not with stock 02 heads, you'll need to replace the springs with some beehive springs.

I seem to remember that .500 or .510 was as high as you could go in a bolt in cam...

If it has tits or gears it will give you problems at some point!!

Sorry about that, my bad. Still need beehive or high performance springs for that lift.

:doh:Crap! Anyone want to buy a V-Thunder 3050 cheap? (In Canada) :bf:

It has more to do with cam lobe hitting the case, and valve guide hitting the top retainer then coil bind.

V-Thunder/Comp Cams recommend spring change when they go over .500 lift...

And this is from the Harley SE catalog...

NOTE: 1340 Cams over .510" lift may require case and/or
tappet guide machining for cam lobe clearance. '84-'85
model's pistons may need to be fly-cut to obtain proper
clearance. Please refer to instruction sheets and service
manuals for more detail.

Agree on the factory springs. They need upgraded over 0.510". I've installed some tall lift cams and not have to modify the cases for lobe clearance. 99.9% of the time the cam manufacturer reduces the cam base circle to allow clearance in the case.

Isn't the 3050 a .510" lift cam?

fbn ent

You are correct...I seem to be losin' me freakin' mind lately. It's a 3030.

keep your stock spring and cut your guide about 3/16 and will be ok

I run that cam in my 95 Fatboy but I have a set of Mackie heads on it that are cut .050 & set up for up to a 550 lift cam. The motor is stock outside of that except for a Supertrapp 2-1 , Sportster module and a little carb work. The bike runs real good
