I need help from some of you Folks. I have a friend in Surfside, Texas who just  bought a '72 Sporty ( his 1st bike). He wants to know how much oil in engine, and also in trans.  I have never worked on any Sportsters, and can not help him...... Thanks

There is a "free" service manual floating around on the net for the 72 XL.  Google "1970 Sportster Service Manual" and use the link to carlsalter.com

Panzer

2-1/2 qts in engine, 1 qt in chaincase.
Everyone wants to change the world but, no one wants to change the toilet paper.

as panzer said a quart in the primary/tranny.
now the engine only holds 4 or so ounces.
the kick start oil tank is  3 quarts.
notice no oil filter.
the elect start tank is different.

so what I am getting   at (not being a wise ass)
is don't toss 2-3 quarts in the engine.
they have a remote oil tank.
