I have a 1997 XLH883 (Sportster, Hugger).  The spring that makes the shifter shaft return to the middle position after shifting gears has broken.  I've completed enough disassembly to get the shifter assembly out, and the broken spring off the shaft.  I tried putting the new one on, but when I put it back on the bike, the shaft does not return.  I have tried a couple of different positions for the spring, but haven't found the right one yet.  Can anybody send me a picture or diagram of just how the spring should be oriented to the mechanism?  Email is: davis859989@bellsouth.net.
Thanks.

No.  Thanks for trying, but that is a different design than my 1997 Sportster.

This situation why every HD owner should buy or otherwise obtain a copy of the FACTORY service manual and parts book for their machine.

That Ronnie's link is excellent though and a handy way to order what you need as you see it.

My bike is having the same problem.  How hard was the job to do?  Did you replace all three springs while you were in there as well as the two retainers and two lock nuts?  Also, did you replace the primary adjusting shoe since you had it all apart.

My main worry is getting the shaft and pawl adjusted correctly when reinstalling.  How did that go for you?

Installing the new spring was not too hard, once I was shown what position to put the spring in.  Turns out that the spring has to be compressed as it is being put in place, then turned just right.  Get a Harley mechanic to show you.  Adjusting the shift pawl was easy.  I just followed the directions in my Clymer repair manual.  Not sure what the other parts you mention are.  I only replaced those spring metal retainers as directed in the repair manual.
