2002 to 2005 sounds about right.

2007 is when I got rid of it on my 2005............LOL

What do you have to do to get rid of it? Is it as simple as buying the pre- cartridge parts and installing them. I have a 2004 flht.

The Road king did not use the cartridge, so if you want to dump the cartridge get the internal parts for the same year RK.

P/N: 45803-97 STOP, oil lock
P/N: 45838-77 BOLT, front fork
P/N: 45845-77 O-RING
P/N: 45859-77A RING, piston damper tube
P/N: 45890-97 TUBE ASSEMBLY
P/N: 45891-97 DAMPER tube assembly
P/N: 45892-02 SPRING, fork
P/N: 45933-86 SPRING, rebound

The sliders for 99 - 06 are all the same whether cartridge or non-cartridge.

In addition, you'll need two new seals, P/N 45875-84A and two containers of fork oil.

You'll have one part, (P/N 45838-77) that you could have used from the old parts instead of buying new, but I have it listed here so that when finished, your converted fork will match the parts catalogs. After I finished, I discovered that I didn't really have to purchase this $22.50 part, the old one is different but it would have worked just fine.

The conversion is really very easy. It only took me 3 hours, start to finish. I could do it in a couple of hours now.
To set the new seal, I used some 1-1/2" PVC pipe, slit so that it would slide over the fork tube and push the seal into place.

Cost me about $125 in parts for the swap over, and it will make future fork oil changes much easier.

Are the internals from the 2008-2009 different from the pre- cartridge internals?
IIRC the late model internals are like emulators and can be insatlled in 2004 lowers.

There was a time about a year ago that you could buy the left and right 06 fork assemblys complete for $328.00 with oil in them, but a recent parts check just let me know the parts have gone up to over $400.00.  Doc

What are the P/N's for the complete left and right '06 fork assemblies. It may just be cost and time effective to buy them even though the price has gone up.  TIA....Ed M.

Thanks Steve for those part numbers. That helps a bunch.

maineultraclassic

Most of those parts are readily available at your local dealers.

There is no difference in the ride at all, and I know the future fluid changes will be much easier.

Does my 06 Ultra have the cartridge? The reason I ask is it's coming apart this winter.
