Inner fairing compatability

Does anyone know if the only difference in the 08 or 09 fairing and the earlier models is just the hole for the throttle cables.  I have a friend who swapped out his 08 for a painted one and was thinking about having the one he removed  painted and just adding the hole for the cables.

The 08 and later have no hole for the throttle cables and they have an extra screw/insert one each side for the adjustable fairing vents.  Both can be gotten around as the hole can be cut for the cables and the bottom three screws line up for the earlier year's vents/
