A good rule of thumb is bearings should be replaced anytime they are side loaded, like when the clutch hub is pressed out of the basket. That being said, many people have disregarded this and the sky didn't fall.

Bearings aren't that expensive and I'd rather ride than wrench.
For a guy like me who doesn't go too far into my own bike without enlisting professional assistance I usually replace things that might not NEED to be replaced just because "we're already in there".
The clutch hub bearing is a good example.

yes but there are a lot that don't replace them, I'm not a member of that group,

I worked on a lot of Sperry Gyro Compasses, rotated the bearings 45 degs in those things every 6 months, others around the world wanted to know how it was we got so much life out of the Gyro Head, as did Sperry
