Greatings again, just mounted  a batwing yesterday, and first set up stock, took a ride on the freeway, felt like someone was trying to shake my head of :wtf:, then tryed set it up so i look through windscreen not ower it, but i still get a lot of turbulence :banghead:, any thoughts ???

Scroll down and read the last several posts in the "future of the Road King" thread. Fork lowers will help a lot.

Cant see how it would remove turbulente the air comming ower top of the fairing glas, but okay might do the job, by the way its a dyna street bob i have the mini batwing fairing mounted on, and its not same mounting set up as for the big dresser fairing mounted bikes, mine is mounted to the forklegs not the frame...

Memphis Shades?  I have one on my street bob and the mount has the ability to tilt a few degrees you can adjust it to suit your best position for the least turbulence.  Bob

You might be surprised as to how much turbulence is coming up under the fairing. But I could be wrong in your case. For windshields, try one with a re-curve from a vendor like Long Ride Shields. Those also make a nice difference.

rbabos

Upflow is what actually causes the turbulence. Tame that and it will go away.

Check for turbulence by holding your arm across your chest while riding and see how it feels.

Remember Jacks Flaps?
Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar.

rbabos is right, and truck offers you a good way of testing it out. The fairing creates a low pressure area behind it which then 'sucks' in air from wherever it can.*

Someone sold a fix for this once, which was a leather vest that had aileron (French for 'little wing') on the front where the chest pockets usual go. When you rode at speed, they actually rose up and acted as an obstacle for the buffeting.

The tourers also have an "ice cream scoop" attached under the lower triple tree in an attempt to stop this.

Just out of interest, have you tried it without the screen? I know it sounds dumb but it's a question of finding and eliminating where it's coming from.

Flipped up screens, add-on flips, and vents in the screen are other fixes.

Unfortunately, the most effective fairings and fixes, e.g. flip ups on screens and fairing edges, also also tend to be the ugliest. There's always pay off ... it is form first, or function?

* BTW, it's not really "suction", my physics is awful. It's the higher pressure of the air surrounding the bike pushing into the space. See "pressure-gradient force".

Why is turbulence not fixed and static but caused buffetting instead? Is it small changes in the air direction hitting the bike or changes in speed of the air filling the empty space behind the screen?

Yes, as stated above the old fashioned chrome wind deflectors mounted on the forks work wonders.
But what do I know? I drive a party bus.

Have you seen a guy with a long beard riding ? well it's always coming up slapping his forehead.

I was searching for videos of Harleys in a wind tunnel without any luck.  Definitely an updraft as that rain is blown "up" onto my glasses if I get to fast in the stuff.

The old mustash tickling the nostrils problem.  :banghead:

The scoop on the lower tree definitely helps, so much that I don't use one because it kills the air flow on hot days. I also tried a few different windscreens, I know I spent a few hundred $$ trying to find the right on. I tried the Klockwerks and variations of it, not much help.

This helped my helmet buffeting.

It looks a little hokey, but i was at the point where I did not care, I needed something to kill the helmet buffeting as it was a serious issue.
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

Lowers give me the pocket to burn one going down the road if so desired. Of course I ride a TR. I keep them on year round.

Anyone have experience with the fork mounted shields and using a Jaggs Vertical mounted oil cooler? I have this combo with no real way yet of knowing if it blocks too much flow to the cooler.

MY Wife put a Hoppe Batwing on her Dyna last year. She says no problems at all. Actually, the windshield was more of an issue.

I have one of the older vertical Jagg 10 row coolers and I do notice a slight increase in temps with the fork shields on, not enough to be concerned with though.

Well just did 100 miles in the mountains yesterday wit the lowers on and have never felt the oil cooler so hot! Most of the time when I reach down and check it, only the bottom tank is what I consider hot and the top and middle is cool to touch.
I'm gonna have to do a less spirited run on the hwy and see if that remains the case.

I have more of a problem with flatulence behind my fairings when fully dressed. Not enough draft to move on it.

Make a mental note not to tuck your t-shirt into your leather jeans otherwise it has a tendency to travel straight up and come out of the neck hole. Worse if you wear a full-face helmet.

I discovered that first hand once. Not something they tell you in the "Manual of Cool".

Always makes me smile knowingly when I see fashionistas walking around in them.
