I have an '03 Deuce and my friend has an '03 Road King. We've been kicking around the idea of adding another gear or 2 for lowering rpm on the highway, or raising the steady cruise mph capability.

What are the best options out there and what's the installation difficulty?

Your best bet is probably the Baker DD7.  They are not cheap but the best quality their is.

Installation takes a while, but isn't really hard.

You may need to buy a few tools you don't have now but there are various ways around some of that.

There is an excellent 2 part youtube video of the whole job start to finish.  If you can't find it, PM me I downloaded it years ago & I'll send it to you.

I hope it's not a problem posting that link here, if it's against the rules I will remove it or one of our excellent mods can

Baker DD7 wont work to replace the 5-speed. You would have to use the DD6/OD6 or SE 6-speed. I bought a used SE 6-speed last year and am very happy with it.

Yeah, my mistake.

I didn't read the OP carefully enough.

Sorry about that,

Yeah and one will probably take more Torque then the other......... :idunno:
2 Bikes and 2 Beemers, that's what I have been told 😳

BAKER OD 6 speed would be my choice

Another option is to install a 34 tooth front tranny sprocket. You may or may not need a new belt. That would lower the rpm by approx 250 in top gear. You would lose a tiny bit of acceleration. You would also need a speedo recalibrator such as the Thunderheart or S&S unit to make the speedo read correctly. Much cheaper than the tranny replacement, and may be enough to satisfy your needs. fwiw Buffalo

I have been running Bakers OD6 with 24/37 primary for well over ten years and its been great. Hot rod around town easy on the hyway. One note the OD6 has a 5/16" thicker trap door that may have you doing a little exhaust mount mod no big deal but now you won't be supprized

Call Baker , I just did their OD6, great price from  California Phil.
That said I just got a email from baker advertising a awesome sale. I forget the prices and deleted the e mail because it was to late for me. But if I remember correct the OD6 in the case was 1800. That's about half price. And I could be wrong so don't quote me, just call and find out for your self. Good luck

Ends up being less that the builders kit I used.

I've been thinking of a 6 speed for my 03 FLH for years but never dropped the coin yet. But my plan would be the od6 and change the primary to 3.37 gearing.

How hard of an install is it to put into a stock case?

Was not a bad job.  I was a transmission virgin until recently.  I was never into it this far.  But with the service manual, help from here.  It was easier than I expected.  I'm fortunate to have a friend who lent me  the speciality tools needed for the job,  that was thy biggest hurdle for me.

BakerStreet instruction are pretty good also,  they need to update a couple things in them tho.  Some things where easier than the directions say. There was a couple parts in that builders kit that the directions said to use the old parts,  but I didn't have to, they were in the kit.
1. The shift pawl assembly
2. The main drive bearing
3   the main drive bearing seal

The builder kit was very complete,  gaskets too.
The one thing that didn't make much sense  to me is the harley service manual said to use a new main drive bearing retaining snap ring.  That was the ONE  part not included in the baker kit.

Doing this to my 2002 FLHTC (103). Got a SE OD 6 complete trans going as soon as I get a chance. Putting the 3.37 gearing back in also with new Evo Industries 10/89 ring and pinion set up. Mine is the complete transmission. Not hard to do a gear set but if dong a SE (Jims) you have to grind a lug from case which will preclude going back to a 5 speed. As far as I know, Baker doesn't require any grinding.

I had to clearance the case for the SE 6-speed but makes no difference to me as I'll never go back. If someone ever wanted to go back you can pick up a used 5-speed cheap. I picked up a used tranny with a cracked case from a low mileage crashed bike. I used the gear set and I don't think I had more than $6-7 hundred into it and I got the hydraulic clutch setup to boot.

I did do some grinding using the baker OD6 , might not of had to, but I did and it's nothing that would prevent a 5 spd from going back in.
Baker says to use the gasket as a template.  I ground about 1/8 inch off where one of the bolts goes that holds the gear set in, The bottom bolt at about the 6-7 o'clock position,   only went about a 1/2 inch in.  It was just for 6 th gear clearance.
Used a dremel, it took longer to get it out of the tool box and put it a way than the actual time grinding.

The DD7 is not an overdrive tranny but same 1to1 as stock.  I does have a lower first gear and the ratios are better going through the gears.  I did my 124" motor and DD7 at the same time but think it should have been the first mod and might have liked my motor better as it was.....not but it was a thought. :SM:
