I bought a new matched set of sprocket shaft bearings on ebay, in the box with the plastic bag , tie and warning label. I installed the spacer ,new races, then one bearing on the flywheels. going to install the outer bearing and it has some damage to the outer retaining cage. I cleaned up the damage and cleaned the bearing. It doesn't feel bad and I know it doesn't ride on the retaining cage, that The rollers ride on the races inner and outer..This was an "open Box" buy and they were inexpensive, However the ebay vendor did not ship right way, so I bought another set, should be in today's mail. My question is about being a matched set? I don't really want to disassemble everything I have done and change the races again, I was wondering if I could just use just one roller bearing from the other set and leave every.thing else intact? Seems like the spacers and races would be the matched parts and the same number roller should be the same? What do you guys think? Mule...

A matched set is a matched set and swapping any parts from it deletes any matching.

You might wind up tight or loose or be OK but it will not be matched.

Dan Baisley reworks a matched set to his own spec, I don't know which direction he leans though or any way to check it.

The bearing(s) the OP is referring to is a tapered roller (cup and cone set) and not a ball bearing as you have shown in the links. If the damage to the cage is corrected and the cage is free of contact with the rollers when mated to the bearing cup there should be no negative effect. The problem I see is believing the parts are a matched set. That means setting it up, housing and measuring all tolerances. ..... or knocking out the cups and installing the new set you have coming.  Your call.

It is a huge risk, just install the known good matched set or take to a professional who can guarantee the fit.

Quicker and cheaper to install the new matched set.

Matched set or not, the endplay must still be measured and adjusted as needed. Not hard, only requires a dial caliper and the means to press a bearing on and press the left side case off.

Lots of opinions offered already. I will not add to the noise. But consider this, if there is an issue with these bearings after the engine is built and running, it will be a lot of work to go back and fix it.

Install the bearing & check the endplay like turboprop said.
There's no guarantee the matched set is going to be perfect. It still needs to be checked. I stock spacers so it's not a problem for me to make adjustments on the fly & I verify the clearance on every set of bearings I install matched set or not.

Took me five tries, finally settled on .004. went through all my spacer shims I have saved over the years. I have the JIMS tools  for removing and replacing the bearing so it's not that bad. I just didn't want to change out the new races I had already installed in the case.
