A friend got one with his '05 RoadKing, no cables or software. Is it a decent tuner? I am assuming a shop that is familiar with it will have the necessary cables and software to use it to tune his bike? He'll be changing pipes, and actually believes me that it should get a proper tune.
Thanks for any info.

Leed

I would think a tuner with experience on the SE tuner will have the software and cables.  He can buy the cables from Harley and download the software.  If I remember the software was free.
I bought the cables and downloaded the software but haven't made any changes yet to my bike that would make adjusting the tune necessary.

Hossamania

Thanks. I don't see a need for him to buy the cables and software, we wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. I'll check with a couple local tuning shops.
Just wondering if it is a good tuner.

remington007

The tuner is OK, i just lacks a lot of the tables needed to do a good tune.

Well that is not reassuring. This won't be a hi po build, so maybe it will be fine.

I don't know about that version, but my understanding is it is like an early version of the TTS tuner. In fact, I think Steve Cole had his hand in the design of it. The pro tuner is the best version of the SE stuff because it allows for more tuning adjustment parameter but not as much as the TTS for example..

The SERT  screaming eagle race tuner was the one made by TTS/Mastertune it was discontinued in 2007 I think. I have one for my 06 dyna. I think the super tuner pro came out as the replacement.   Bob

Yes, I believe that is correct. However it seems as though the pro tuner is merely an extension of the SERT. Steve explained it to me a few years ago at SEMA but the details elude me now.  :embarrassed:

A classic - my buddy calls around to talk to some tuners on this bike, '05 stock 88" with the SE Pro Tuner, wants to put on Rinehart true duals. It already has the SE slip on mufflers, and I am assuming a canned map, based on the decel pop.
He talks to one shop that just does downloads, and the guy actually said, "Just put the pipes on, it will probably run better."
Seriously, you can't make this stuff up.

BVHOG

I have two old laptops I keep around with the old super tuner software and tuned a lot of them years ago and still see a couple every year. Nothing wrong with it whatsoever if you know how to pick the right starter map. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on the bike for the mods you describe.
That being said you can buy the Power Vision license for 2 bills, have the ability to pull the map that is in the bike now and have unlimited access to whatever tables you need.
If you don't have a sense of humor you probably have no sense at all.

Hossamania

I actually own a Power Vision, so he could buy the license and use mine to have it tuned, but not tuned by me. I know my limitations. He probably doesn't want to have to pay to use a different tuner, but his Pro Tuner came with the bike and he did not pay extra for it. He wants to make sure it runs well, so I think he is willing to do what it takes. I've told him what I have learned here concerning tuning, and told him to call around to some of the local tuners to confirm or deny the info I gave him. That's when he started getting info that was all over the place, including the previous comment to just put the pipes on and it will run better.
One place said it would take 6.5 hours to tune, and cost $900. The search for a tuner continues.
Of course I didn't help by saying "as long as we're doing this, we should just put some cams in it..."

:teeth:  always with the quick comment

decent enough tuner - the hard part is finding the qualified operator - shouldn't cost over 3 bills, although some of the older bikes can be a little tougher to tune, or so it seemed at our shop  :nix:

It's on the list. First I might have to spend that money on an amplifier and speakers...
Sorry Smarty, the Ohlins are also on the list, but the list keeps getting rearranged.
Mmm... Amplifier....
I think I should go see the doctor, something is wrong with me.

I agree something is wrong- any one who would spend $ on audio upgrades before engine work must be possessed
Ignorance is bliss, and accuracy expensive. How much of either can you afford?

Thanks for that info, Tomcat. The shop that gave him that quote was unfortunately a local HD dealer.

Yes Thumper, I think there may be something wrong with me. I will have rethink this and get my priorities straightened out. Thanks for the push in the right direction.
