Now, I spray but clearly have alot to learn. Are there different size tips for say, clear, metallics, base coat?

seattledyna

sorta, but if you get the right size tip and gun it will shoot everything with no problem, you would want a larger dia tip for say heavy bodied primer or so, and a small tip for fine touch up work.
For most all my MC work I use a half pint touch up gun, I dont do cars so my larger 1qt gun that I can spray "mass quantities" with just gathers dust.

Talk to your paint supplier, they will have lots of good info for ya

A cheap gun will spray cheap, so be leary of bargain basement stuff, its one of those things that "you get what you pay for"

Thanks Mike, what do you suggest? I see those SATA's are really popular. What a decent gun for the money?

seattledyna

Sata is a very nice gun,  you get a good gun and use it often and its like an old reliable friend after a bunch of years :teeth:

this an Iwata HVLP detail gun, also a very good brand

I use this Sharpe 1/2 pint gun the most, I can spray tanks, tourpacs, fenders etc. with ease and great coverage

so Mike, it's ok to use a bottom feed gun with the urethane paints? someone mentioned to me you could only use a top feed gun for them so I borrowed one to shoot my fender with urethane last week. kinda disappointed me that I couldn't use my trusty old all metal 1 quart gun I've had for like 25 years.

btw, with your advice & guidance and an experienced guy at the paint supply, my 1954 fender came out great. thanks again!

Al, of course you can use a siphon cup gun with the modern paints! The siphon/gravity HVLP guns are a bit more efficient and shoot easier on the "underside" of a project though, however they take way more air to operate.
Dont believe half of what you here out there , check with your HTT brothers first!

Thanks Mike!

I'm so impressed with how my fender came out I'm thinking of repainting my Shovel over the winter. I had her painted about 5 years ago but was never happy with the job. at least if i do it and it's less then perfect it's easier to live with, lol

I woulda rather have shot lacquer because I'm more familiar with it, but I gotta say, that urethane & clearcoat looks pretty sharp

This is a nice starter system.  Comes with 2 tips for the big gun.  I own this set, and since I paint about once a year.  It does great for me.
